The team

We currently have an opportunity within our Property and Infrastructure Disputes (PID) practice group for a 1-3 year PQE Contentious Construction lawyer based in Edinburgh, with options for flexible working.

The role is to join our Contentious Construction teams located within the firm’s PID group, which is part of the firm’s wider Commercial Disputes and Regulation division. 

The team has a busy and broad practice with a particular focus on the energy sector, and regularly advises on the following areas: infrastructure, civil engineering, utilities, wastewater, transport, oil and gas, renewables (hydro schemes, tidal, onshore and offshore wind), flood prevention schemes, commercial developments, domestic, PFI/PPP, and professional negligence.

The role

As part of the team, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Advise clients on their contractual provisions and obligations, in the context of issues and disputes;
  • Provide strategic pre-dispute advice to large commercial clients, including assessing the strength of position, options to avoid formal dispute processes, and the preparation for such a process;
  • Take an active role in large-scale Scottish and English court actions in the TCC, Court of Session, and Sheriff Courts, and also experience a wide variety of alternative dispute resolution options including arbitration, adjudication, and mediation; and
  • Documenting settlements and agreements, and advising clients on the concluded position, including how to continue projects and commercial relationships.

Skills required

  • Demonstrates an appropriate range of legal knowledge, and a willingness to learn and expand this knowledge.
  • Experience dealing with commercial disputes (previous construction experience is preferred, but is not essential. The team provides excellent training opportunities for those keen to move from more general dispute practices);
  • The ability to work well within a growing and dynamic team; and
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
